HELP contact us

At Harber London we are experts in the design and manufacture of leather goods, and we pride ourselves in using only high-quality and environmentally responsible materials for our products. This means, we know a thing or two about the different types of leather and their levels of quality.

In this article we will guide you through the wide variety of finishes one can get out of cowhide, and while our products are made using full-grain leather, we describe a few others so you can make a well-informed decision when choosing your next wallet.

Travel documents need to be stored in a way that is both secure and practical, since any photo identification might need to be shown several times, and the constant bringing-out and putting-away could result in the passport being misplaced or lost. Luckily, passport wallets offer the perfect balance between functionality and style, since our designs include multiple options, so you can choose the best one for your needs and focus on your travels.

Types of Leather for Wallets

Genuine leather, the least durable layer

After taking the parts needed for full and top-grain leather, the remaining layers are used to manufacture what is known as genuine leather. This material is of a lower quality than the previous two, and it is often processed and treated with a coating that makes it look smoother and protects it from stains and scratches. However, this type of leather is not as durable and the treatment might crack and show signs of wear after some time.

Wallets and accessories made with this sort of material do not last as long as items made with high-quality leather, nor do they maintain their appearance after they have been used.

Suede, a different texture

In some cases, style and texture are the main attraction of a particular piece, and while suede is not nearly as durable as full-grain leather, it can be a coveted material. Its velvety and soft texture comes from the part of the hide where it originates: the underside. The main advantage of this material is its unique aesthetic.

Nubuck leather, durable and soft

Similar to suede, Nubuck leather has a soft, velvet-like texture; however, it comes for the other side of the hide, it is essentially top-grain leather that has been sanded and buffed on the grain side. While it scratches easily, this material is more durable than suede and it is often used by luxury and premium brands due to its fine texture. However, this material is also not nearly as durable as full-grain leather and it does not develop a patina over time.
